What is Mould?

Mould is a microscopic organism that grows from spores (seeds). As scary a word as “mould” can be, mould spores are constantly around us, whether we’re inside or outdoors. People’s tolerance to mould exposure can vary greatly.

Individuals at increased risk of the adverse effects of mould exposure include:

  • Infants and children

  • The elderly

  • Immune-compromised individuals

  • Pregnant women

  • Individuals with respiratory conditions

There are 3 ways mould spores can enter the human body:

  • Inhalation: Breathing in airborne mould spores

  • Skin: Touching mouldy surfaces

  • Ingestion: Eating spoiled food

Mould requires an organic food source, a source of moisture and just the right level of humidity to thrive. Most indoor mould problems can be controlled by limiting the amount of moisture present in a given space.

Unfortunately, moisture intrusion within your home has many possible sources:

  • Leaky roofs

  • Leaking pipes

  • Combustion appliances such as gas powered clothes dryers

  • Clogged gutters

  • Faulty sump pumps

  • Recurrent plumbing troubles

  • Indoor/outdoor vegetation

  • Kitchen steam from cooking

  • Showers/baths

Recent construction methods have led to a reduction in the fresh air exchange found in many newer builds. As such, your dwelling’s ability to eliminate excess moisture may have been compromised from the start. No matter which materials were selected for the construction of your home, it is your responsibility to be aware of any excess moisture build up. Mould produces enzymes that just love to digest the organic materials found in homes and offices, including our wallboard, carpeting and ceiling tiles, just to name a few.

Not all types of mould are toxic, but health issues can arise if prevalent mould is permitted to grow unchecked.

Elements Affecting Indoor Air Quality

The quality of the air we breathe drastically affects our long-term health, productivity and quality of life. Whether at home or in the workplace, no one is immune to the possibility of breathing in pollutants.

The sources for these airborne contaminants include:

  • Asbestos

  • Biological pollutants

  • Carbon monoxide

  • Formaldehyde/pressed wood products

  • Cleaning products

  • Personal care products

  • Nitrogen dioxide pesticides

  • Radon

  • Second-hand smoke

  • Stoves, heaters, fireplace, and chimneys

  • Construction material
